Facebook has announced a salary increase for its US employees. The measure, which will be applied in mid-2020, may soon be extended to workers from other regions internationally.

“Facebook says it will commit to supporting content moderators so that their wellbeing is prioritized.”

The company has stressed its commitment to workers and has promised to adjust wages to match the prices of life in the United States, especially in large cities where there is a large concentration of population and prices are higher.

Facebook has also signaled a special rise in benefits for its content moderators. Specifically, the company states that “We will provide them with higher income, additional benefits and support programs, given the nature of their work”.

At times it is known that in San Francisco, Washington and New York the minimum wage of regular workers will rise to $ 20 per hour. However, for content moderators, the salary will go up to $ 22 in the same cities.

The increase in salaries is related to the criticism that the company has received in recent months as a result of the condition of its employees, especially the content moderators.

Moderators from several cities have reported suffering from post-traumatic stress related to their functions within the platform, as they are constantly exposed to violent and disturbing images that have progressively affected their mental health.

In addition, the latest reports also indicate that their work has led them to believe in some of the conspiracy theories that they should moderate during their day on Facebook.

This happens while government institutions, such as the European Union, exert more pressure on the social network to increase its moderation of content, calling it insufficient.

Given this, Facebook has issued a statement noting that the moderation of massive content is a great challenge for the company and workers and will continue working on it.

The company continues to say that it will commit to supporting content moderators in a way that prioritizes their well-being.

In this sense, Facebook has announced that it will provide psychological care for its workers throughout the working day and that it will sporadically survey its employees to check their mental health and be able to readjust their work practices.

Coupled with this, the moderators will be able to activate by default the censorship on the explicit images so that they do not take them off guard when moderating content.
