On the eve of the great elections that are coming in East and West, and among others, this Sunday in Spain, Twitter has launched a function that allows its users to report false or misleading tweets published during electoral processes. However, the function will not arrive in time for the Spanish General Elections on Sunday, but will be available for the first time during the next elections in India and, later, in the European elections in May.
“The tool will be active from the voting day and will remain for the following 7 days.”
With this tool, users will be able to report any content that may be deceiving voters, such as false information about places and hours of voting or incorrect voting requirements.
Users must click on the little arrow on the right side of the tweet and then click on «report tweet» and «this tweet contains lies about the elections».
The tool will be active from the voting day and will remain for the next seven days to avoid spreading false information about the results or the process.
In addition, Twitter has indicated that the new function will be enabled at the international level with each vote. However, the app does not specify which countries and / or organizations will be part of this system or if only the function will be used in the case of presidential elections.
The incorporation of these measures, together with others that Twitter has launched since the beginning of this year, are related to the pressure exerted by the European Union on technological companies and the spreading of hoaxes.
Since 2017, the European body has established strong regulations for technology. In fact, right now, these are in a kind of test phase that, if not, will lead to government regulation of the Internet by the EU.
Last year, companies such as Facebook, Google and Twitter, took steps to improve the situation and signed a code of practice in misinformation with the intention of limiting the false news spread on their platforms.
However, the European Commission has been monitoring these companies and the response remains negative, especially in terms of electoral advertising.
That is why the upcoming electoral processes will be fundamental in deciding whether the work of Twitter has been effective enough to counteract the false information in the social network and, in turn, satisfy the EU.
