Instagram Becomes an Online Store

Instagram has an option to put the products on sale but, until now, when a user clicked on it, it was redirected to an external website (the website of the store, the online store on Facebook…) to make the purchase on it.

“Instagram will charge businesses a percentage per transaction to cover the costs of using the credit card.”

However, Instagram has just launched the possibility of making payments directly within the application. That is, the transaction can be completed completely within the social network itself.

At the moment, the possibility of making payments for purchases within the app is part of a beta program that the company is testing with around 20 brands among which are clothing firms, cosmetics … among them are Adidas, Nike or Kylie Cosmetics, according to Digiday.

That is, the functionality is not available to any user, but the fact that it is already being tested with some specialized stores in the United States shows that it is possible, that Instagram thinks about it and that … it will not take long to reach the rest of the markets .

For now, in the coming weeks it will be US users who can start making purchases on the platform. This novelty will mean that the “View product” button, as it was known up to now (and that led to the redirection to the external store), will be renamed “Acquire on Instagram” (Checkout on Instagram in the English version). It allows making the complete purchase within the platform.

The user only has to complete their personal information and their credit card to make the transaction. This data can be stored on Instagram to be remembered for future purchases.

Yes, Instagram will charge online stores “a small amount” for making the transaction of sale within the platform, as well as to cover the costs of the operation with a credit card. At the moment they have not specified what those costs would be.

However, the elimination of the “barriers” and the start of direct sales within Instagram is a radical change for the application that was once only an app to share photos. It becomes a proper ecommerce and a 100% transnational platform for companies.
