Some Indian regional authorities consider that the use of TikTok by the youth of the country has led some adolescents to commit acts of cultural degradation. Therefore, they urge the government of India to take action against TikTok, the social network based on short videos that has become tremendously popular in recent months.

“The large number of users of TikTok makes it difficult to control the type of content that is disseminated through this social network.”

In particular, the organizations that have put TikTok in their sights have been the regional government of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The Minister of Information and Technology of that state, M. Manikandan, wants the Central Legislative Assembly to ban TikTok in Tamil Nadu for serving as a platform to extend sexual content.

Although it may seem an exaggeration, the fact that TikTok users around the world have complained about certain content they have found on the platform. Among them, anti Semitic content and racist video. But what worries the Indian authorities are some sexual videos found on the platform and the use of it to make and spread acts of bullying.

In fact, only in December 2018, 36 Indian teenagers called help lines against bullying, claiming they were cyberbullying through TikTok, and at least one of them committed suicide.

While these contents are not exclusive to the Indian community of TikTok, this country has a large number of users of the social network, adding a total of 20 million.

This has meant that TikTok has prepared a division in India to coordinate with the country’s authorities in search of solutions other than banning the app in one of its largest markets. Especially now that they are starting to introduce advertising.
