The industrial processes have become very important procedures for the elaboration of a great number of products that, from the different raw materials, are transformed to satisfy the needs of the users. In any type of field it is important to know their different concepts, phases and characteristics to provide a remarkable benefit to the business.


In order to understand perfectly what these industrial processes consist of, the first thing we must take into account is the etymology of these words, or rather, this concept. In this sense, we have to say that both come from Latin, as do most of the words in our language. For its part, “process” comes from “processus“, which can be translated as development or advancement, while “industrial” comes from the Latin word “industrialis“, which is related to the operations that are carried out for create any product or service. Starting from both meanings, we can get an idea of ​​what industrial process means, that is, it is about the different stages that are carried out within a large operation, with a well defined final objective and always based on the industry.


Taking into account the aforementioned and knowing what each one of these words means, we can clearly say that industrial processes are a set of operations, which are carried out in greater or lesser time to be able to create, manufacture or transform a large number of products.

Through these processes, it is intended to take full advantage of the natural resources used for the creation of these products and, subsequently, become specific and appropriate tools that can meet the demand of users.


Although we have already talked about the use of natural resources and the subsequent creation of the different products in the previous section, it is true that we also have to refer to a major objective of these industrial processes, which is to get the largest number of benefits. However, these profits can not be obtained without first producing products that can be launched on the market and of quality, always bearing in mind that manufacturing will be carried out from raw materials that have a better cost. The goal is to transform these raw materials as much as possible, to adapt them and create specific products that serve to meet the demand of citizens and all their needs.

Phases of an industrial process

As the name suggests, a process is a set of operations and that is why, to complete an industrial process it is necessary to go through a series of phases. Typically, 5 of them are listed, although in many cases, they can be simplified and perform some tasks in just one step. Thus we can name the following stages of an industrial process:

  • Contact with the raw material and manipulation of it.
  • Conditioning work to transform the raw material .
  • Transformation process with the corresponding techniques.
  • Separation of the raw material to turn it into a product.
  • Creation of the final products.

Types of processes

In addition to all that we have already mentioned, in this last section we must refer to the different types of industrial processes that exist today. We are going to give you a brief summary so that you know what each one of these types consists of.

  • Continuous operations: They refer to the moment in which the transformation process is carried out during a specific period of time and always in a continuous manner. Here, technology plays a very important role. This type of operations are used, mainly, in the energy or chemical industries.
  • Discontinuous operations: They are very similar to the previous ones, although the transformation process is carried out in a shorter time, since the product is changed frequently and easily. It is the paper or food industry that usually makes the most use of these operations.
  • Batch operations: It is the oldest process that exists, since it is carried out through a clearly defined sequence. What is done is to mix the raw material and then transform it with specific conditions. The products are taken out in batches and then extracted individually. The pharmaceutical industry or the textile, usually use these type of batch operations.
  • Discrete operations: Those that are carried out to create only one product at a time. Normally the products are large, such as a vehicle or an airplane and several transformation processes are carried out in one place.

Applying these types of processes and finding the one that fits best with each type of business will be essential for the role that the company performs to reach its maximum volume of performance.
