How to Easily Use the H1, H2 and H3 Tags in your Posts

Do not know how to use the tags h1, h2, h3? When to use them in SEO? For what?

The good use of tags h1, h2 and h3 is essential to achieve a good SEO positioning in Google search results.

Its use is very simple if you use WordPress. The h1 is automatically added when you fill in the title field that says “Enter the title here”. You do not have to add any more h1 within your articles.

The h1 tag

The h1 tag is one of the most important amongst the more than 200 SEO factors, as it helps Google understand what is the highlight of your article. It must be unique for each article or page.

The h1 must contain keywords that help position the article taking into account what people are looking for through Google. The titles you choose for your posts are actually the h1.

<h1> Main title </ h1>

You should check that your articles have a single h1. To analize your post, click on the right button of the mouse and “View source code”. Then “Ctr + F” and look for “h1”.

It should show two results within the <body>, a single h1 </ body>. The h1 that opens and the one that closes. You may find more but they must be between the <head>.

This is one of the things that I first analyze, when asked, if I want to see at a glance if a website is optimized for SEO.

Keep in mind that the h1 is different from the title of the page although the content will be the same or very similar.

The title tag is the one that appears in the browser tabs and is usually formed with the h1 and the name of the blog. Google takes this content to show it in the search results along with the content of the description tag (although Google can change them depending on the search).

The subtitles. (This is a h2)

The h2 are the subtitles. They are used to separate content and give more information to Google. They should contain synonyms or words related to the main theme of the post. They can also be used as an introduction. This is what I do in all my posts and it works very well.

In WordPress they are easily added by selecting the text and choosing from the top bar in “Formats”> “Headings”> “Title 2”.

You can check if you have several h2 using the previous technique (right mouse button and “View source”) or if you want to analyze your entire page you can request a free SEO audit.

Additional subtitles (this is an h3)

The h3 are subtitles within h2. They should focus on the content of the subtitle. The content of the h3 must contain related keywords that help its positioning.

Find below a short example:

How to be an SEO expert (h1)

Needed knowledge (h2)

Programming (h3)

Digital Marketing (h3)

Social networks (h3)

Courses (h2)

Conclusions (h2)

At first it may seem a bit messy but as soon as you start using them you will create articles that are easier to read. As a trick, I recommend using the free Table of Contents Plus plugin that adds an index to your long articles and allows you to browse through the content at a glance.

The use of h1, h2, h3 will make your articles escalate posts and increase your visits. Try that your posts are long enough to solve problems without having to go to other websites to find more information and if necessary provide the relevant links to facilitate the reader’s life.

With the improvement of Google’s algorithm (the system it uses to choose which pages are the best to show), this type of optimization is losing strength. The user’s experience is the future and the present of SEO so keep this in mind but do not obsess about it. Just create epic content and the rest comes only.
