It’s been a while since I haven’t written about leadership but today is the day! Hope you enjoy it!
As executives or entrepreneurs, aspiring to become the leaders of our teams is not a negligible goal, but not only requires having a great specific knowledge of the field we are talking about, but also the ability to lead a team without bias of any kind .
To test your ability, let’s review the 8 Key Leadership Behaviors that you need to practice:
1. Know when to make decisions
A true leader makes decisions both for himself and in relation to the team he leads. You will not always have all the time necessary to make those important decisions but you need to know what is the “right time” to take them … otherwise if you stop doing it for a while, this will have negative effects on the team you lead.
2. Build trust in your team
To be a good leader you need to take into account all the inputs of your team. Whenever possible, meet with your team and discuss and discuss issues related to them and shared goals. In this way members feel important and develop a relationship of loyalty to you as a leader.
3. Be Responsible
A leader is always willing to take responsibility, regardless of the outcome of situations. If the conflict is caused by another person, the leader assumes responsibility and seeks to rectify instead of creating alternative dilemmas or cause major conflicts.
4. Empathize with your Team
As a leader you need to develop your recognition skills, both positive and negative. All your collaborators need and enjoy recognition and rewards. Knowing how to make this recognition with the people of your team at the right time should be a key quality in your day to day. Also, if the performance is not correct, you will need to know how to rectify that behavior in time and form (in private), without giving too much importance to the fact of having made an error (error management as a tool to generate confidence and promote innovation).
As a leader you are supposed to have a high degree of confidence in your approaches and approaches. It is a way to build a reliable image so that your people see in you a figure to ask for advice and inspiration as a model. As a leader, your behavior when facing challenges will be key to leading your team.
6. Inspire others
A good leader is the one who constantly inspires his collaborators. You need to know how to motivate and encourage them by focusing on their strengths instead of highlighting their weaknesses. It is the most effective way to inspire them and that they can and want to give and show the best version of their abilities.
7. Cultivate optimism
The best leaders surround themselves with positivity. Whatever the circumstances, especially if they can undermine the morale of your team, the leader does not lose hope and works to provide reasons for his team. As a leader you are supposed to have a high degree of faith in yourself and in your abilities so as not to let a negative situation affect your performance and your influence.
8. Always have a Plan to follow
If you want to be the best leader you need to always think ahead with a clear plan of your next steps. Whatever your idea, strategically plan with your team to pursue it and reach the goal.
As a leader you must keep in mind your ability to influence the development of leadership skills in the members of your team in order to meet the demands of the organization. It is a complex “balance” that is part of the overall development of the leadership of your organization. (generate new leaders even better than yourself). A clear focus on achieving a balance between achieving the goals of the organization and developing the skills of the people in the team. (talent development) is the kind of behavior that leads companies to achieve success in their results.
Moving the people of your team towards the achievement of these goals is not a trivial task and that is why the leaders need to show behaviors that inspire and motivate their people towards transformation.
Among all the qualities of leadership, there are 4 that stand out especially in relation to the ability to influence the achievement of goals: create a clear vision, understand the organizational culture, the ability to focus on the development of performance and skill to promote innovation.
Involve your people in activities that allow to correlate the benefits and growth with the goals of the organizational culture. Ask for ideas to improve the interaction between departments, for example. The idea is that the team focuses on fulfilling the tasks of its department in a direct and permanent relationship with the vision and goals of the organization.
The creation of a vision of the world is the work of a generation rather than a person, but each one of us, for better or for worse, adds his own brick.- John Dos Passos
Understanding the Culture of the Organization
It is a critical skill in a good leader. The culture of the organization is a point of inclusion of all the members of the team in relation to their values, objectives, attitudes and expectations. And each of these 4 elements become pillars of the leader’s action to motivate their teams and align them with the vision.
To build an organization of mutual respect and understanding, leaders need to understand the patterns of behavior that will lead to that desired culture. He or she will focus on fostering unity within the organization. and of course, they will put all their efforts into developing open communication mechanisms that favor creativity and the development of ingenuity
Individual behavior depends on the interaction between personal characteristics and the environment that surrounds it. ” – Kurt Lewin
Focus on Performance Improvement
One of the keys as a leader to motivate your people to achieve success is your work of coaching and professional development. For this you will need to focus on the observation and frequent performance interviews to identify which skills the team shows as strengths and which areas require additional focus.
Develop efficient conversation models that allow you to involve the people in your team in conversations about their performance so that they are more powerful and with win-win results for both.
The idea is to build an environment of trust and collaboration. Only from there can we lead the team towards the strategic vision of the organization.
“We are the result of what we do repeatedly. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit. “- Aristotle
The Secret of Large Companies: Innovation
As leaders we need to generate a culture of “generation of ideas” … it is the way to prevent the bureaucracy from limiting our productivity and innovation.
Look for formulas that help your people to develop ideas to solve problems (brainstorming, mental maps…). This generates a better teamwork environment and an improvement in the relationships between the team members and offers new experiences to each person. It is also true that this type of procedures may have some associated risks (imbalance between team members, communication barriers…) but the result is worthwhile.
Now you know something more about the basic pillars of your performance as a leader to achieve the results in your organization. Dedicate a time … analyze at what level you are in each of the points, find your areas of improvement and apply yourself in small concrete steps … I know that your ATTITUDE is the correct … you may only lack small fitness pills. Ahead! Believe in you … and if you need help …
I will be happy to talk and see how I can help you as I have done with other leaders like you in recent years.
