Business Psychology, the Science to Improve Working Life

Business psychology is the science that studies the means to achieve the improvement of working life. This discipline combines the understanding of the science of human behavior with the experience of the business world. Its objective is to achieve an effective and sustainable performance, both for individuals and for organizations.

The concept of business psychology is easier to address if you take into account some of its main characteristics:

  • It is a multidisciplinary science that investigates how to make people and organizations more effective.
  • It uses social methods of scientific research to study people, places of work and organizations, in order to better align their multiple, and sometimes opposite, needs.
  • Its objective is to create healthy and productive relationships between people and organizations, from which the mutual benefit emerges.
  • Psychological research, which initiates the process of analysis carried out by business psychology, must be applied in a pragmatic way and always according to the situation in each specific case. It should seek to establish a reciprocal relationship with the company, in order to benefit from the internal perception of the procedures that work best and the sources of value generation. Business psychology, in practice, relies on a wide range of social scientific research methods that help you identify the best corporate practices.

Among the most prominent are:

  • A combination of qualitative and quantitative methods.
  • Common data collection methods, including questionnaires, surveys, focus groups, interviews and case studies.
  • Analytical techniques such as descriptive and inferential statistics, thematic analysis and content analysis.

The professionals of business psychology carry out their work in 5 phases:

  • Advice: providing an unbiased, scientifically demonstrable perspective on the problems or shortcomings of people at work.
  • Diagnosis: helping organizations to better understand the weak points and challenges, for example, high turnover and low levels of commitment.
  • Design: of the necessary tools to tackle problems and improve their ability to control and identify difficulties.
  • Delivery of solutions: implementing customized solutions to the detected organization problems.
  • Evaluation: measuring the effectiveness of interventions to, at the same time, demonstrate evidence of individual and organizational benefits.
